KĀ PŪTAHI YOUTH
BCN -
After hearing from young people and whānau that they were keen for more things to do in Belfast we have launched Kā Pūtahi Youth. Kā Pūtahi is the Ngāi Tahu name for the area of Belfast. It also means to converge or connect together and references the many waterways around our area. We have partnered with Kia Kori Waitaha - a community play initiative in the Northwest area, and Adventure Specialties Trust, a certified outdoor adventure provider.
We recognise that the current environment can be very challenging for our rangatahi. Kā Pūtahi Youth is based on the principles of the Circle of Courage/Circle of Mana model - which shows that to experience wellbeing a child needs a sense of belonging, independence, generosity and mastery. Kā Pūtahi Youth will be run in the school holidays for local year 7 to year 9 young people. We now have funding to offer this programme on a regular basis. We are also working with Pūtahi Belfast School and have a youth worker staffing the library 2 days a week.
After a successful pilot last year, we are starting our KPY afterschool club for up to 13 senior campus students - times etc TBA.
